Professional Orientation for doctoral students

Target group

The workshop targets doctoral candidates of all disciplines. Doctoral students in their last year, who are not yet clear on their sense of direction for their career path.

Content

This workshop gives an overview of various professional options for young natural scientists. A special focus will be put on the different requirements in academic research, industrial research positions and the manifold jobs in administration, management or NGOs. Finally, the importance of the personal fit will be discussed and tools will be provided to check if requirements, expectations and skills match.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the workshop the participants will have gained an overview of alternative career paths in their disciplines that lie beyond academic research and can assess the various demands on task bearers. They will be able to assess their professional qualification and skills with regard to a possible fit for advertised vacancies. Moreover, they will know the significance of their own motivation structure in terms of career decisions.
