Publishing Research Articles: Strategies and Steps

Target group
Doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers from the natural sciences and life sciences except from the faculty of medicine.

  • Publishing in open access journals
  • What editors want
  • How to respond to editor’s comments
  • What reviewers do
  • How to write a review report by yourself
  • What to do in case of rejection
  • Authorship
  • Copyright issues
  • Ethical obligations
After this workshop,
  • you understand publishers’, editors’, and reviewers’ missions and tasks
  • you evaluate publishing activities in respect of ethical guidelines
  • you compare target journals based on relevant criteria
  • you judge the usefulness of different strategies for achieving publishing success.
Short lectures provide information and tips; extended exercises help to develop individual strategies. In addition, participants share experiences and discuss recommendations.
In preparation of this workshop, participants select three journals relevant for their field of research. For each journal, they bring to the workshop information about: (1) aims and scope, (2) reputation, (3) editors and editorial staff.
