Spoken English – Enhancing your Communication Skills

Target group

This course is for doctoral candidates, with a minimum English-language proficiency level of B2.

Aim

To improve pronunciation and fluency, broaden your vocabulary and grammatical range; encouraging confidence in both oral and written English, giving you the practice and skills that will lead to success in your chosen area of study and your profession as a whole.

Approach

Fluency in spoken English comes at a price of very hard work and consistent practice but, once achieved, makes a very strong impression on the listener. The course will comprise of the following methods and techniques:

  • Familiarisation with the sounds of English and the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)
  • Understanding the essentials of grammar, syntax and vocabulary
  • Changing your thought processes from your native language to English, enabling ideas to start flowing freely in English in your mind so you can then communicate these thoughts with greater ease
  • Utilising various techniques, like observation of mouth movements, imitating intonation and rhythm of speech, to ‘neutralise’ your accent to help you to get you closer to sounding like a native English speaker and to equip you with a ‘global accent’ - not American or British English, but correct English
  • Improving fluency through discussions and debates; dealing with Q&A, learning language for presenting, persuading, contrasting
