Writing for Scientific Purposes

Target group

The workshop targets doctoral candidates in the natural sciences and life sciences; at a minimum proficiency level of B2.

Content

This workshop models approaches to refine, review, revise, and edit scientific texts —such as summaries, abstracts, articles, proceedings, results, and conference presentations— through individual and collaborative engagement in compliance with respective discourse style conventions.

 

Objectives
  • You know how to design, set up and execute various research plans.
  • You balance insights from both design research and scientific research data.
  • You analyze excellent reading and oral presentation materials.
  • You apply sophistication and clarity in articulating complex conditions.
  • You draw on a variety of networking ways to present findings in compelling verbal and visual representations.
  • As individual and as co-author you model scholarly work for publication.
  • You demonstrate imaginative and unique writing style and voice.

 

Methods

Sample texts generated and revised by participants as well as published works will serve as basis to study and produce clear and impeccable writings.

 

Entry Requirement

Each participant is invited to submit a recent writing sample (draft or final version), such as an abstract, a summary statement, or a motivational summary to articulate why s/he enrolls in this workshop; not to exceed 200 words in length. Submit text sample as a Word document to bcgilliar@manchester.edu. Deadline for submission: 5 PM on Friday, June 9, 2017. On subject line write “Entry Sample IGA Workshop“.
