Content

This course aims at supporting you in preventing, managing and solving conflicts – be it in your professional career, during your PhD or postdoc, or in your private life. Conflicts may arise due to different interests, goals, estimations or expectations. They can originate from structural reasons like limited resources, from intra- or interpersonal reasons.

Many people avoid addressing conflicts or feel unsatisfied by the way they handle them. Rather than reacting on a purely emotional level, you can learn how to manage disputes and disagreements constructively and proactively, and to control your emotion and deal with the emotions of others.

You will gain ideas about how to improve your own behavior and already start practicing this. Topics include:

 Types of conflicts

  • Conflict dynamics and escalation stages
  • Personality types and conflict behavior
  • How to address a conflict constructively
  • How to respond to criticism
  • Preparing and leading a conflict talk
  • Constructive Feedback
  • Dealing with your own emotions
  • Dealing with emotions of others
  • Discussing selected cases of participants

Objectives

  • You know the different types of conflicts and how they may escalate
  • You know about your own conflict behavior depending on your personality type and are able to reflect on it
  • You are able to address conflicts constructively

Methods

Diverse mixture of trainer input, case studies, participants’ cases, practical exercises and group reflection.
