Practical approach to Programming using R and RStudio (advanced course)

Target Group

Doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers of all disciplines. Postdoctoral researchers in the faculty of medicine cannot participate in the workshop. Participants with basic R programming experiences are addressed. It is an applied course making use of the Statistics Program R and the development suite RStudio.

Content

The aim of this workshop is to provide an up-to-date practical approach to programming using R. Focus will be laid on direct applications in R and examples. Being able to do simple programming steps will enhance your comprehension on all future R problems which may occur.

Objectives

After the workshops the participants:

  • know the basics of programming in R
  • can handle boolean values
  • can create conditional statements
  • can create and handle loops
  • can use databases
  • can create SQLite databases

Methods

The workshop begins with several examples of programming using R. Based on the practical examples the statistics program RStudio will be used to solve simple R programming problems. Instead of a printed script a prepared Word or Pdf document is handed out which leads through the course and makes it easy to document the learning process. You are encouraged to discover the functionality and the solutions yourself, since it is best for your learning experience. The course instructor will moderate the course, assist with individual issues and give short presentations or explanations to the group when needed.

Requirements

Participants are required to give a short presentation of their research project and how they want to use R (max 3 minutes). Please prepare one page/slide/image which represents best your intended use of R and send it one day ahead to the course instructor. Please bring your own laptop to the workshop and have R and RStudio preinstalled. If you got problems installing R or RStudio please contact in advance ralf.zeidler@fridata.de for assistance.
